The Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) that monitors and assesses the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 has advised the World Health Organization (WHO) that the B.1.1.529 variant should be designated as a Variant of Concern (VOC), named Omicron.

This variant carries a large number of mutations, and preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection compared to other VOCs. The number of cases of this variant is increasing in almost all provinces in South Africa and imported cases are being reported around the globe.
