Join AustCham Mongolia and our guest speaker Mr Bruce Harvey, who will share his insights on earning a ‘Social License to operate’ in the extractive sector, for the next instalment in AustCham Mongolia’s professional speakers calendar.
Mr Harvey has 38 years of worldwide mining experience and has spent the past 18 years focussed on community and social performance, including working extensively with herders in the South Gobi since 2010.
Bruce is currently the Principal of a boutique consultancy, resolution88, specialising in ‘Social License’ solutions for the extractive sector and an Adjunct Professor at the Sustainable Minerals Institute, University of Queensland, Australia. For seven years Bruce was Global Practice Leader – Communities and Social Performance at Rio Tinto. Bruce’s career has spanned 38 years of worldwide field experience in the mining industry. In his early career as a geologist Bruce developed an affinity for working with land-connected peoples.
With academic qualifications combining science, economics and humanities, Bruce has spent the past 18 years at the forefront of community and social performance as a new professional discipline in the extractive sector. Well published, Bruce maintains that earning a Social License should be based on mobilising the practical skills of the extractive sector and host communities, aligned to their intergenerational aspirations. Since 2010, amongst other frontier assignments, Bruce has worked extensively with herders in the South Gobi region of Mongolia, seeking to understand and develop with them options for economic development based on their comparative advantage in transhumant herding.
