About The Billion Tree Fund:
The “Billion Tree National movement” in Mongolia, initiated by the President of Mongolia, aims to combat climate change, desertification, and land degradation through extensive tree planting efforts. Launched in 2021, the movement has garnered commitments from both public and private sectors, with a target of planting 1 billion trees.
In particular, the banking and financial sector pledged to contribute significantly, with a goal of planting 88.6 million trees, including 50 million specifically from the banking sector. To facilitate this, The Billion Tree Fund was established in March 2022, driven by the Central Bank of Mongolia and the Mongolian Bankers Association.
The fund is focused on establishing strong governance and aligning with international standards. It aims to enhance coherence in climate adaptation policies and create a stable financial mechanism for environmental initiatives. A key innovation of the Billion Tree Fund is its approach to diversify financing sources for the environmental sector, moving away from traditional budget reliance and international loans to include innovative, non-returnable domestic financing options. This approach is designed to support sustainable forestry and enhance the overall effectiveness of environmental projects in Mongolia
